Although it is usually chocolate…. or soaked in liquor, there are no rules when it comes to the groom’s cake. It can be funny or fancy, or even hidden in a back corner – remember the red velvet armadillo groom’s cake in the movie Steel Magnolia’s?? Often the cake is designed to reflect whatever hobby or sports team in which the groom is particularly interested. It can be designed for a favorite team, a college fraternity, a golf ball, on old favorite car or even an airplane. The more specific the better.

Going for something nontraditional may mean you’ll save money, appeal to more guests, and not have to endure the one year anniversary, eat your wedding topper tradition. In a recent poll from savvysugar.com, 60% of people said the cake was a disposable expense, while 40% said it’s an absolute necessity! I don’t know about you, but I’m with the majority on this one.

The average 3 tier wedding cake can run you between $400 and $600! That’s a lot of money that could be spent in other areas or simply saved. Here are some ideas of ways to “cut the cake” so to speak.

Wedding Cupcakes

Wedding Cupcakes are becoming quite popular these days. You can use many more flavors which makes certain your guests can find one they will enjoy unlike a cake. They are bite size and much more affordable. Usually a guest will try to refrain from the “cake they shouldn’t eat because they are watching their weight” but a cupcake is to enticing to pass up. Add a fresh fruit to the top and it’s that much more enjoyable.

Custard or Gelato Bar

Gelato is a friend to all! It’s healthier than ice cream with 70% less fat and has a vast variety of flavors with all natural ingredients and fruit. It’s perfect for lactose intolerant people, and let’s face it, who isn’t lactose intolerant these days. Paciugo Gelato has well over 250 flavors and caters 1-3 hours for less than your fancy cake would cost.

Cake Pops

These little guys are to cute. Cake Pops are becoming more and more popular and showing up everywhere. They are little cake balls on popsicle sticks. Smaller than a cupcake and when paired on a table with other fun finger sweets, you have yourself a plate of goodies. Try putting them together with cookies  or sweat-tarts and gummies. This delicious dish would be a great addition from blog Milk and Cookies called Mille Feuille.

So whether you want to cut cost, ditch the cake, or simply do something different at your wedding, these are some great ideas. Making them unique and personal will make you happy, as well as your guests.

I think it’s worth pointing out that the railing is modeled on the set by Lake Como in Italy where the Anakin & Amidala wedding scene in Attack of the Clones was filmed. Of course, if you’re the sort of person who is impressed by that kind of thing then you probably knew that already…

 

Little Han and Leia even enjoyed a 3 week honeymoon in Singapore, New Zealand and Sydney. I don’t don’t if I’ve ever been more jealous of a 3-inch action figure but it sure looks like they had a great time.

 

There’s nothing more glamorous than an all-white cake. This four-tier cake is covered with fondant pleats of ivory chocolate adorned with chocolate lilies and ribbon. Presented on a simple black-stained wood pedestal alongside black-and-white toile-pattern dessert plates, the look is tailored and elegant.

She goes by the name of Optimus Prime and has this to say about her wedding:

I created my Optimus and Elita-1 cake toppers myself using carved up Heroes of Cybertron figures along with FIMO and paint. Then at the reception the tables were divided up by different Autobots. Each Table setting had The Autobot on front and then the entire bio on the back. With TechSpecs info!

Wow, she has a serious thing for Transformers. What a great way to add a little fun to your wedding. I know girls always have a perfect “White Wedding Dress” wedding in mind but I must admit that I love seeing creative themed weddings like these.

The base, helmet, ribbon, exhaust pipes, and nail polish-painted lights were not edible. Everything else, including the fondant and pastillage head, windows, and chest, were. They wouldn’t be tasty, but you could technically snack on them with your afternoon tea. I had originally hoped to make Optimus Prime’s head out of cake so that my brother could eat it with a spoon, but time constraints and the crazy decision to make this a secret groom’s cake made that too difficult. The secret was a success. He was surprised.

Optimus Prime kept the Decepticons from crashing the reception. He gazed upon the proceedings with stately calm, even when two different people (one drunk) gave the bride a piggyback ride on the dance floor. His lights glowed well into the night and protected us all.

I know there are a lot of themed cakes now-a-days at weddings but I would love to dig my fork into this one…and finish it off with a bite out of an Ewok. Is that creepy of me?

The bride, Rebecca  Dudeiros, says that this cake wasn’t even made in a bakery…she had her buddy (a pastry chef herself though) Teresa Ulrich do it custom for her. What a good friend…and with amazing talent.

Cupcakes towers as the wedding cake is becoming increasingly more common but I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen something this cute. It takes a wonderful childhood memory and incorporates into your special day. Take a look at Katy in the last photo. She is so ecstatic as she first sees the creation in its final form. The cake/dress was made by Lukka Sigurdardottir and is completely extraordinary. Though we probably won’t see a bride wearing her cake anytime soon (unless the groom smashes it in her face), it’s refreshing to see what inspiring things are being done with both cakes and dresses these days. By the way, if you checked out our wedding planning checklists, you’ll find that ordering your wedding cake four to five months before the wedding will ensure that you won’t have to worry about the cake as you get closer to the big day.
