Legend has it that Leprechauns are mischievous little people that like to hide valuable objects in pots and have buried secrets. Hence, the secret pot of gold. They are the self appointed guardians of ancient treasure. Crafty little fellows. This legend lends itself to the perfect marriage proposal set up. Plus, you will have the extra benefit of giving your marriage the “Luck of the Irish”.

Here are 5 fun ideas for a St. Patty’s Day Proposal:

#1: Pot of Gold: The most obvious is to bury the ring in a “pot of gold”. Place the ring in a nice pouch and bury it in a Shamrock plant. In March you can find Shamrocks for sale just about anywhere – even the grocery store. Do yourself a favor and replace the plastic container with a nice pot from any garden center, a gold pot would be clever. She will be able to keep and reuse the pot as long as she wants and always remember the well thought out proposal.

Tip #1: Be sure that he’ll say yes. You’ve both declared unending love? You’re on the same page about households and babies? Good. Also make sure your guy is the type who’ll be flattered, not threatened, and who won’t feel as though you’ve stolen his big moment.

Tip#2: Ask him in a way that suits his personality. Flashy (Jumbotron!), private, romantic, sporty…you know what he likes. Unsure? You need to spend more time with him.

Tip# 3: Pop the bubbly! Now if you can only get him to plan the wedding…

Travis Pittman is a web producer for Fox 5 News, and while proposing to his girlfriend on the Des Moines Marina Pier, he accidently dropped the engagement ring into the Puget Sound! On Sunday morning, Pittman was quoted to say:

“I’m prepared for the fact it may not get found.”

When uploaded, the path is overlaid on Google Maps. That day I ran a route that was a little haphazard and I saw what looked like a letter and then hit me!  I could run in the shapes of all kinds of things and it would appear on Google Maps.  Animals, shapes, smiley faces, words, you name it.  I decided I would run out the words M-A-R-R-Y-M-E-? and have the route uploaded to Garmin’s website and then from there I could fashion a way to propose to Kristin.

Now you might be asking yourself, how’d he do it? Well, before he set out, he wrote it out on a piece of paper (below) with guide markers to help him along the way.

I knew I wanted to find a very special way to propose to a very special woman. I liked the look of light writing, but I wanted to do something on a much larger scale. To my knowledge, a light writing of this size had never been done before. I had the idea of placing a camera at the top of a tall building and mapping out the words “Emily, will you marry me?” over part of the city. I used Google Earth to check out the views from several large buildings in downtown Raleigh, N.C. Since none of the letters could fall on areas that were inaccessible by foot, the requirements for the vantage point were very specific. I finally found the perfect spot – the top of the Clarion hotel. Luckily, the Clarion has a restaurant that is open to the public on the top floor.

After all his hard work he made the image and the video…and in the midst of a comfortable night at home he asked her if she’d like to see something he’d been working on. He showed her the video and when the image came up of “Emily, will you marry me?” he was down on one knee with the ring in hand. Needless to say she said “Yes!”

She obviously said yes, what girl in their right mind wouldn’t and the whole thing was on his Tumblr and he later posted a Flickr gallery with a bunch of photos. I wonder how much a proposal like this runs…actually I wonder how much they’ll spend on the wedding in order to top this.

Disguised as a tourist, Andrew from Stereo Waltz Films captured the video on a FlipHD. Then, the newly engaged couple took the camera with them for the rest of their day in the city!

Can you give us the story behind your proposal?

Chris – Ashley and I share a journal in which we write little love notes and letters to each other. We go back and forth with journal entries and this time I was in possession of the journal. I made the decision a couple of weeks before going to Manhattan that I would use my newest journal entry to set up the proposal. Since I was going to be proposing on top of the Empire State Building and I have huge fear of heights, I thought it would be poignant in my journal entry to talk about fears. Not only fearing heights but fearing to allow someone to be in your life forever and how I have no fears with God and her on my side. Really cheesy stuff, I know. Once she finished reading it, I did the deed and lucky for me she said yes.

Did you know he was going to propose to you?

Ashley – When Chris and I planned our trip to New York over the summer, I had hopes that he would propose to me there. The New York trip was my college graduation gift so what could be more perfect than being proposed to? Although I had hopes, I never looked at the trip as my possibility for engagement. Chris and I both love the city so that excitement was enough for me to look forward to. The couple of weeks before we went, certain events would come up that basically shattered any hope I had of Chris proposing. It was very important to me and Chris that he would talk to my parents before he proposed and so a conversation I had with my mom before we left discouraged me because it sounded like Chris had yet to ask for my hand in marriage. All in all, I had no idea he was going to propose, especially on top of the Empire State Building (since he is terrified of heights).

How did you feel? Were you nervous?

Ashley – There were so many mixed emotions when I realized he was proposing. At first, I had to ask him a few times if he was serious because I really didn’t think he was actually proposing. My overall feeling, and you can definitely see it in the video, is of pure joy. I couldn’t stop smiling and keep asking Chris if this was all for real.

Chris – Yes and no. At various times during the day I was nervous. I was never really nervous about asking her. I was more so nervous about somehow losing the ring. When your carrying that ring around before proposing its like keeping a loaded gun. Every so often I would check my bag to make sure it was still there, in fear of some evil gremlin having come in to steal it. Of course I was a little nervous once we got in the ESB (Empire State Building) because I was so freaked out about heights.

Who did you tell first?

Chris – I texted my mother once we got to ground floor of ESB saying “She said yes!!!” She then text me back “Of course she said yes, I’m happy 4 u.” I love my mom.

Ashley – The first person I told was my younger sister, who was behind the whole operation. She knew of the plan to propose a month before it happened so it was extremely hard for her not to let the cat out of the bag. I sent text messages to friends and family because I was speechless the whole day.

How did the rest of your day go?

Ashley – The Empire State Building was the first thing we did when we got to New York so we had literally the rest of the day to spend in the city. Naturally, I wanted to just go home and share the story with my friends and family but it was good to be able to spend the first day of being engaged alone in the city together.
