Marriage has sometimes been referred to as “taking the plunge” but never has it been done this literally (although this comes close). We’ve all had our fears of what can go wrong on our wedding day ranging from the caterer showing up late to a rip in your veil, but what about the entirety of your wedding party, 80 people in all, plunging into the beautiful lake which you’re posed above to capture the moment.
Dressed in her wedding gown, bride Marli can der Walt, and in his suit, groom Hoffman, along with 78 of the closest friends and family members, also dressed to the nines, found out the hard way that wooden decks can only hold so much weight.
Their beautiful wedding took place at the Dragon Peaks resort near Winterton, South Africa, not far from Johannesburg. The mountain you see in the distance is the Drakensberg, the perfect backdrop for a group photo.
As the crowd gathered in though there was slight creaking noises heard. “There was even some joking about who was so big that they were making the deck creak, when the deck groaned again,” said Alet van der Walt, the groom’s sister. “The next moment the wooden struts decided they’d had enough and broke right behind where the bride and groom were standing.”
Most all of the guests feel into the lake, except a few who held dearly to the railing, to get an early and unexpected bath. All were able to be rescued from the water quickly including the bride’s mother who was wheelchair bound, an 11-month old baby and an 88-year old grandmother. The only injury to report was a splinter which one guest got in his thigh.
The photographer, also the the bride’s brother Hurbert, managed to get a photo as the deck collapsed before jumping in to help gather the fallen along with the various floating handbags, hats and shoes. After everyone shook off the water and got back on their feet, they retook the photos and finished the reception off in regular fashion.
