Unique Save-the-Date Cards That Won’t Break the Bank

By posted February 4, 2010, 9:08 am | Comments: 2

From the engagement party to the bridal shower to the wedding ceremony, wedding invitations can end up costing you the GDP of a small country. A great way to pocket some of that money is to find creative alternatives for save-the-date cards. Below are a few tips on crafting inexpensive reminders that are truly unique.

Personalized Notes

If you’re the type who prefers a letter to a poke on Facebook, then why not design your own save-the-dates? You can find card stock online in every color from sea-foam green to strawberry. Paper-Source has a great selection of cards you can buy in bulk, as well as cards in various textures and shapes. As for the design on the card, there are some adorable wedding- and celebration-themed ink stamps (think champagne flutes, wedding cakes, etc.). You can also have a stamp made with your future monogram that is something you can continue to use even after your wedding planning days are through. The final touch: hand-write your wedding date details.

Geographical Reminders

A clever way to remind family and friends to mark their calendars for a destination wedding is to send post cards. Getting married in New Orleans? Give your guests a taste of what the wedding will be like with a post card of beignets and a café au lait. There are tons of post card options to choose from such as vintage, landscapes and tourist attractions. There is a great selection of cards on Zazzle.com for pennies each. I guarantee they won’t end up in the trash after they’re read.

Entertaining Messages

Your wedding is an event and a memorable way to convey this is to create save-the-date cards that mimic concert tickets. There are a number of free templates on the web. You can design them any way you please, simply add your own wedding date info and photos (You may want to exclude a price of admission though!). For the finishing touch, print the tickets on paper with perforated stubs.

Some great ideas for brides…I especially like the “theater ticket”…

STD cards — if used — and invitations to the wedding put your rite-of-passage into “real time & space” — so choose from the heart, yes?!!

I like the idea of doing bottles of wine with the labels made for the couple. Maybe a little expensive, but a great keepsake that you know other people will use.
