Fresh Ideas for Mother of the Bride Corsages

By posted February 21, 2013, 3:40 pm | Comments: 0

My mother hates corsages – can’t stand them.  She enjoys fresh flowers but has a serious problem with pinning a big mum to her lapel or heaven forbid – sliding one on her wrist.  I don’t know why, maybe it’s because she’s so tiny and petite or maybe she had a bad experience with one of those over sized homecoming mums in her past.

When I was planning my wedding she started to get squirrelly when we talked flowers, finally she asked me if I would mind if she pinned her corsage to her purse and wore it that way.  “Of course not, whatever makes you happy,” I said.  (She’s paying for the wedding – what else am I going to say?)  It looked fabulous, the photographers went nuts for it!  And best of all… Mama was happy.

It doesn’t have a specific name as far as I know but for now we’re going to call it the “clutch corsage”.  Maybe the “purse corsage”, the “handbag corsage”?  I called one of our favorite local florists, William Box Designs, to get the skinny on these corsages to see if they have a proper name.  According to William, the answer is “no”.  He said he happily makes them from time to time and they don’t have to be any different from a regular corsage.  Just pin it to your purse.

I think they are so elegant, I especially love the first one made of gardenias.  Don’t you know how good that smells.  Maybe we can spread the word and push these toward a full blown southern trend!

Top 10 Flowers for Winter Wedding Bouquets

By posted November 11, 2012, 10:31 pm | Comments: 0

Winter is full of beautiful flowers and foliage to create and one of a kind winter wedding bouquet.  There are just as many beautiful choices for your bridal bouquet in the winter as there are in the summer.  My two favorite ideas at the moment are blackberries and coffee bean berries.  Yes, coffee bean berries!  The coffee berries are a beautiful color from green to a lovely red and the blackberries are eye-catching whether you use them green or dark purple.  Roses are an easy year round choice and the deep reds and violets are perfect in the winter.  Pair them up with some unique berries or foliage and you will have a stunning and original bouquet.  You can also use some beautiful accents like pine cones, peacock feathers, sprigs of heather, dried lilac and dusty miller.

Here are a few great winter flower choices:

Ranunculus – (a.k.a. buttercups)  Their lush blooms and multi layers of petals are often mistaken for peonies or roses.  They come in a wide variety of colors; white, pink, yellow, orange, red and purple.  This is a very versatile flower that blooms from January to May.  The price ranges from $2-$3 per stem, this is compared to $12 per stem of peony.  This flower is a jackpot!

Tulips – With their long clean lines and multitude of colors this will always be a bride’s favorite.  They bloom between December and April and range in price from $5-$10 per stem for French Tulips and $5 or less for standard tulips.

Paperwhites – This beautiful and highly fragrant flower consists of several small white flowers at the top of each stem.  It is an easy to bloom bulb in the Daffodil family.

Roses -  They are really available year round and available in any price range.  The most expensive garden roses can range from $4 – $8 per stem.

Sweet pea – This is a favorite for winter and early spring weddings because it’s so delicate and fragrant.  Sweet peas come in a variety of colors such as pink, white, yellow and red.

Poinsettia – This is a well know choice for Christmas weddings but it also comes in several colors if that’s not your winter theme:  Red, orange, purple, cream and white.

Bells of Ireland – These are a lovely choice to add a beautiful green line to a winter bouquet.  They are in season from January to October but are accessible year round.

Snowberry – These delicate berries are available in a range of color from green, white to pink.

Coffee bean berries – Actually, it’s just a coffee berry or sometimes called a coffee cherry.  (Technically the coffee bean is inside the berry)

Pine cones and sprigs of evergreen – Nothing says winter like a sprig of evergreen or a little baby pine cone in your bouquet.

What is Ombre???

By posted October 17, 2012, 10:08 am | Comments: 0

Ombre color is everywhere you look.  More and more brides are finding a way to add a little ombre flair to their southern wedding.

So what is ombre???  At first glance you might think of tie die but it is much more subtle and elegant.  It’s from the French word, ombrer, which means shading.  It simply means  having colors or tones that shade into each other for a gradual and very dramatic effect.  Check out these great ombre ideas and find one to fit your style:

Mississippi Fall Wedding Ideas

It’s time!  Now that it’s officially fall we can bring out the pumpkin decorations, pumpkin cakes, pumpkin frappuccinos, pumpkin everything.  How about using some of those beautiful pumpkins in your own southern wedding decorations, and you can continue the theme with tiny pumpkin place card holders for your reception.  So cute!

Personally I am a fan of apples in the fall, especially candy apples.   Check out these cute pics of rustic candy apples with real twigs.

Accessorize Your Bridal Bouquet

By posted September 12, 2012, 11:41 pm | Comments: 0

There are some lovely ways to accessorize your bridal bouquet on your wedding day.  It could be as simple as adding a little glitz with an eye catching jeweled brooch or as personal as a little angel or good luck charm that only you know about.  You can go old south with a piece of your great grandmother’s lace and an old family heirloom.  A sweet way to remember a lost loved one on your big day is to have a small photo, hanky or memento close at hand.
