A Google Maps Marriage Proposal

By posted July 25, 2010, 9:30 am | Comments: 1

Now we’ve had a few creative marriage proposals and even a few geeky ones. This next marriage proposal truly takes time and preparation. Derek wanted to find a creative and fun way to propose to Kristin, his girlfriend of 18 months, so after failed idea after failed idea, he thought of something truly creative. After Derek finished his routine run one day, he was uploading the GPS information from his Garmin Forerunner GPS Watch when he realized something.

When uploaded, the path is overlaid on Google Maps. That day I ran a route that was a little haphazard and I saw what looked like a letter and then hit me!  I could run in the shapes of all kinds of things and it would appear on Google Maps.  Animals, shapes, smiley faces, words, you name it.  I decided I would run out the words M-A-R-R-Y-M-E-? and have the route uploaded to Garmin’s website and then from there I could fashion a way to propose to Kristin.

Game Developer Builds Video Game To Propose

By posted April 28, 2010, 8:47 am | Comments: 2

When graphic designer and 2D/3D artist, Anders Howard, 24, wanted to propose to his girlfriend Steffany, 25, he wanted to do it in the most interesting way he could imagine. The couple had been dating for 5 years and originally met in their High School drama club but didn’t start dating until a few years later. As a video game lover and one capable of developing his own games he knew exactly what he was going to do to ask her to be his wife.

Along with a few of his friends (Jeff Aydelotte the programmer, Thomas Bennett Jobling the animator, Ian Buczkowski the musician and Justin Fong the rigger) he built Dinner Love and the Quest for Soup! – A Marriage Proposal Game.

The game begins with an extra-large Steffany trampling around San Francisco looking to increase her “Happiness” meter by filling up on food items (like cheeseburgers and cupcakes) but watch out for Hungraa the hobo looking to steal your food. In short order Mr. Hungraa has a change of heart and hands over a jewelry box to her.

Anders had his girlfriend play the game as a “tester” in front of a bunch of family and friends at her 25th birthday party. As she reached the end of the game, a box which held an engagement ring appeared on screen, and unbeknownst to her, he too pulled out an actual ring and proposed to her in front of all their loved ones. She of course said yes!

Video Game Hacked For Geeky Proposal

By posted April 12, 2010, 8:29 am | Comments: 9

Maybe even geekier than the recent post we had about the video game wedding invitations comes a wedding proposal by way of a hacked video game. Phill and his fiance (now wife) Anna are avid video game players and Phill wanted to come up with a unique way to ask her to marry him.

He thought about taking her to the site of their first date, Mount Baker, near Bellingham Washington but didn’t think there would be a way to do it as a surprise. He then came up with the idea of recreating it digitally. He didn’t end there, he was studying computer science at the time and had been tinkering with video games and altering them. He figured way to take a game Anna was currently playing, Chrono Trigger, and modify it with a few of their memories (stargazing, dancing, even her favorite song lyrics from the Princess Bride) and finish the whole thing with his proposal.
